Someone started working at my place, the person was introduced to me with a male name, but seen from far and their clothing i though it was a woman. Now I dont know if I should/can ask about their gender (german country), before I say something wrong while speaking.

I personally wouldn't get offended as most likely people don't misgender on purpose.

Asking out of nowhere might make it awkward, I would just address them as you feel they appear to be and if you accidentally misgender them just apologize :). At least that's how I would want it to be if that were me.
