.@samvega2020: “Health care is a human right and we need to start treating it as such.” He says the fight for Medicare for all is a fight the Democrats need to lead.
.@Biggan4Congress “We must get to universal health care.” He says insurance is just one part of the system. He advocates for a wholistic approach which includes bringing down costs of med school.
.@FlemingforTX24 says health insurance needs to be more competive and supports expanding the affordable care act. “There is no reason why people should be walking around without health care.”
.@candacefor24 says she injured her back in a car accident during high school. She had to get three jobs to pay for rehabilitation and medical bills.
“The solution is we should have an affordable public option,” she says.
.@JanForCongress “Everything is in chaos,” and says she thinks incremental steps toward Medicare for all is most likely and plausible solution in current context.
Next question is about climate change: What is the aggressive national response needed? Explain why you do/don’t support the green new deal?
.@samvega2020 says he supports the GND. “This plan and this commitment is vital. It’s absolutely a necessary. .. I want to get to place where we’re not worried about our grandchildren.”
.@Biggan4Congress reminds the crowd he’s a scientist. Climate change “is a real thing he says.”
He says it’s going to be tough but The good news is that we have the technology to make big changes he said. He points to @DFWAirport going carbon neutral as a model.
“Now, it’s not econonicmally fiseable to do these things,:” he said.
.@FlemingforTX24 says he supports carbon taxes and credits. “It’s coming.”
He also wants to encentivize companies to scrub carbon.
.@candacefor24: Says we need to examine climate justice. “We need better air.” She says corporations need to clean up their act to improve air and water. We need to add to trade deals climate aspects.
.@JanForCongress “Our house is on fire. ... There is no time for incremental steps.” She says there are plenty of green jobs to transfer coal works. Research and development needs to come up with ideas across the board. “No one idea won’t fix everything. So let’s do them all.”
.@KimOlsonTx suggests using military funds to accomplish some of the green new deal. She says when environments become unstable, it creates national security issues.
She also suggests using farm bill for other solutions.
Next question is about the diversity in #TX24 and how they are best able to represent the district.
.@Biggan4Congress says his wife teaches at one of the most diverse schools in the district. But he leverages his professional background being the only teacher and scientist on the stage.
.@FlemingforTX24 “Folks are looking for an authentic leader.”
.@candacefor24 “To win a district like this one, you have to bring out people who feel disengaged.” She says she has the most diverse coalition.
.@JanForCongress “I show up,” she says. She points to all the diverse groups she frequents including Muslim groups in the district.
.@KimOlsonTx takes the first shot at a competitor and pushes back at @Biggan4Congress for saying he’s the only teacher on the stage.
Olson says she is a mother and she taught her children “how to walk” among other things.
The crowd laughed.
Speaking of the crowd, the auditorium is nearly filled. I’d suggest it’s a bigger turnout than the #TX24 GOP event I attended earlier.
.@Biggan4Congress invites Olson to join him or his wife in the classroom.
Olson replies: “I’ve taught for 18 years.”
The next question is about abortion rights. @FlemingforTX24 says only women should have a say on their own bodies. @candacefor24 chimes in, “elect women to make decision for women’s health care.”
.@candacefor24 says her priority is to repeal the Hyde Amendment.
.@JanForCongress says she wants to ramp up funding for @PPFA. She adds that an abortion ban would create a divide.
“If we come to a point where choice is outlawed, only the wealthy will have a choice.”
.@KimOlsonTx says reproductive rights is a right and when it’s taken away it means women lose their freedom. She says more eduction is necessary to help continue to drop abortion rates.
Both @samvega2020 and @Biggan4Congress echo others and say they want to see Roe v. Wade codified into law.
The next question in the #TX24 Dem debate is about campaign finance reform.
@candacefor24 says it’s paramount and points to gun control and climate change legislation being dependent on getting special interest out of politics.
.@JanForCongress says she has singed a pledge to amend the constitution to enshrine campaign finance reform.
.@samvega2020 says the system is broken. “We have a system that rewards greed.” He says he wants elections to be publicly funded.
“I agree,” is popular slogan tonight among the Democratic candidates.
The next question is on legislative priorities.
@JanForCongress talks about her “income is income” bill that would tax capital gains like other income.
“It will rock a lot of boats,” she said.
.@KimOlsonTx says she wants to end “endless wars.” “These wars have cost us $4 trillion. What could we have done with that, folks?”
