Does anyone know if @Blockstream is doing any work on sidechains? I see a paper from 2014, but nothing else. Am I missing something?
Also, do they tackle the issue of having to maintain shared knowledge across the entire set of chains?

The chains are independent at the application level. Each mine the same coin but the coins are fungible cross-chain. They can be destructively transferred between them via SPV by drawing a Merkle proof which "piggy-backs" on the consensus level's peer header braiding.pic.twitter.com/Idqb3vs3Vt

Same trick works equally as well for smart contracts assets (e.g. tokens representing cryptokitties) as SPV will soon be a native
@kadena_io's#Pact smart contract language. You can provision for the throughput needed for smart contracts by loading them on multiple chains
