The ONLY way I see LN working: if *all* channels except at most one make bidirectional transactions that compensate within the desire of settling on the main chain. i.e. you have a network of banks. So, LN is presented as "decentralization", but it's about establishing banks.

That said, I'm not against establishing banks. Actually, that's what my rival proposal consists in. It's just that the literature about the LN is *massively* misleading if that is the end game.

My intuition is that it could only work—if at all—if the LN had some strong topological properties, and I haven't read anything about it (which properties+can they be emergent). I haven't seriously dug around this, but it smells fishy to me as well.

Not sure I understand your concern. They’re deferred main chain transactions that you exchange with counterparties, with some cleverness to allow for “trustless” (assuming you pursue on main chain) multi-node hops
