Static methods exist only because OOP conflates / complects classes-as-namespaces with classes-as-data types.

The "OOP" (and especially Java-style) confusion between classes as namespace or data is typical of what Korzybsky calls "insanity": confusion between compile-time and runtime, between a representation and its denotation. OOP language designers are literally insane.
