First you write types as comments; then you invent a type language; you want types for mutation; exceptions; resource ownership; reflection; macros; concurrency; persistence; upgrade strategies; staging; virtualization... more than existing typecheckers can offer.

Same with memory: GC is not magic - does not prevent memory leaks. While smart C++ debuggers shows memory leaks, JVM does nothing and usually (memory) leaky code ends up in production.
