My thesis distinguishes 3 axes for meta/base: ante/post (code generation), hyper/hypo (levels of abstraction), back/fore (runtime control).

Note that in all those cases the "meta" computation comes *before* not *after (metaclasses would be anteclasses). There goes etymology.

"base class" is taken, though. "meta" really isn't "after" in the CS sense; see the linked paper in the StackOverflow answer.

In my thesis' terminology, meta/(generated) class would be ante/post classes. base/(inheriting) class would be hyper/hypo class.
