ASDF 1 has always downcased symbols. The manual documents it since 2.000. No style guide existed before to recommend use of canonical names.

Asdf 1 allowed symbols for mindshare-compatibility with mk-defsystem which was then the de facto standard.

Not that it has ever been able to read a .system file directly, but i wanted it not to look completely alien to people who wrote them
