It comes from ASDF 1's (defun coerce-name (name) (typecase name ... (symbol (string-downcase (symbol-name name))) ...)

MK-DEFSYSTEM canonicalized system names with string-upcase. It looks like so did Genera's SCT. ASDF preserves case for strings but UAYOR.
