I don't know enough about Grace Hopper to have a definite opinion of her. But when someone tells me to revere her because she did COBOL, that certainly lowers my opinion of... that someone.

I admittedly have never done any work in COBOL but I do find it fascinating in many ways. Why do you think COBOL is bad?

COBOL is designed to make non-programming managers believe they understand programming by making the small-scale structure of programs painfully obvious, while completely screwing up the larger scale structure of programs. I would have been quite modern in the early 1950s.

That is not how I see COBOL at all, I see it more as structured like the enterprises it was/is being used in, which I find very smart. Is it possible to exemplify what you mean by small scale vs large scale structure? Was that better in FORTRAN?

COBOL in 1959 was madman's portable assembly in a straightjacket—a straightjacket that then lacked even subroutines. With PERFORM THROUGH, ALTER and NEXT SENTENCE.
