I don't know enough about Grace Hopper to have a definite opinion of her. But when someone tells me to revere her because she did COBOL, that certainly lowers my opinion of... that someone.
COBOL is designed to make non-programming managers believe they understand programming by making the small-scale structure of programs painfully obvious, while completely screwing up the larger scale structure of programs. I would have been quite modern in the early 1950s.

That is not how I see COBOL at all, I see it more as structured like the enterprises it was/is being used in, which I find very smart. Is it possible to exemplify what you mean by small scale vs large scale structure? Was that better in FORTRAN?
