As a fun thought experiment, I wonder what would be the gut reaction to the idea of "centrally" planned markets, where prices are chosen by referendum. So the owner of a business has no more or less say than you do in how much their goods cost.

Actually, translated to common English, the famous Churchill quote goes: "The best political regime is one where I am head honcho of a worldwide Empire." I tend to agree with him, but no one is offering me an Empire, and I'm not bloodthirsty and cunning enough to make my own.
