As a fun thought experiment, I wonder what would be the gut reaction to the idea of "centrally" planned markets, where prices are chosen by referendum. So the owner of a business has no more or less say than you do in how much their goods cost.

A book you might love is "The Calculus of Consent" by Buchanan and Tullock, using Game Theory to study how Democracy actually works—when it works. Then, there is Caplan's "The Myth of the Rational Voter" that explains how, mostly, it doesn't.
