Indeed. There was this long thread on the role of world religions in long distance trade, and also my recent thread on the protective measures in Venice to facilitate trade with the Orient. Religions are survival rulebooks, and full of rules on hygiene.

Religions are also aggressively territorial, and until nation states came along, were the institutions most preoccupied with creating mutually exclusive and exhaustive realms. The second tool after hygiene is social ostracism (ghettoization).
