C is not the new assembler—it's the old assembler, braindamaged into lacking proper tail calls or the ability to safely control memory usage, and turned into a minefield of "undefined behavior" in the name of "winning" pointless benchmarks. A language by and for idiot savants.

To be fair, optimising C compilers (clang, at the least) do generate tail calls where appropriate
