In my thesis, a fore-program does the abstract thing the user wants (e.g. play that game or that video, edit that document) while a back-program fills in the details (current console, storage, language, etc.) in the backstage without the programmer even being aware... [1/2]

But when the details filled in are the way the user interfaces with the program... then the back-program is actually the frontend, and the fore-program is actually the backend... Contravariant metaphors! [2/2]
