Care to say a bit about how you see the particular contours of their incorrect perception?
A tool isn't useless because it was misused once. Images built from source are a great debug-and-deploy tool. Orthogonal persistence is the essence of all databases. Code as data is behind all metaprogramming, refactoring, "smart" editing. Unbundle, rebundle.

Databases are one of the more unpleasant parts of dealing with automated test environments partially because persistence makes testing irritating. To the extent that you can make systems stateless and idempotent, it is easier to prove or test their properties.

And certainly we can't do without databases and state. We need them. But it's nice to avoid persistence where it isn't really necessary to get much cleaner insight into behavior. In the current case, it also makes layering and modularity simpler to design.
