Writing programs is programming, full stop. This is a tenet of inclusion. Deciding that play doesn’t count is actually unhealthy on a number of levels. I think the activity you want to distinguish is developing software.

Yes, I did, and I think your complaint is valid but your analogy is wrong and damaging in its own way. I recommend fixing how we talk about professional background, not saying that "programming" gets retroactively redefined once you learn computer science.

People who learned to code via Excel or MySpace or such were programming, and it's part of their experience. It's important not to try to intimidate people, for sure, but this feels like it just moves the damage around.

Not impressive from which point of view? Zero to one can be more impressive than one to googol. But it sure isn't enough on its own to move the frontier much further, even multiplied ten billion times. Necessary but not sufficient. Not sufficient but necessary.
