Did you read Raymond Chandler's essay "The Simple Art of Murder"? He notably credits Dashiell Hammett with bringing murder back from these upper class fantasies to the underclass where it belongs. The upper class uses lawyers, policemen, military and spooks for their dirty work.

I have not, although it sounds interesting! I have to admit my tastes in mysteries run towards weird puzzles and the "impossible crimes" side of things though, so as long as your artificial contrivances are solvable and entertaining I’m all here for it!

For this kind of mysteries, I prefer going the whole way into Science Fiction and reading some Asimov. Although I might still prefer Heinlein.
