A few hours playing with the configuration of pulseaudio, jackd, fluidsynth, qsynth, alsa, and more, were not enough to convince vmpk to produce any single sound. #LinuxOnTheDesktop

Apparently important: (re)start vmpk *after* you started fluidsynth (options -i -s are useful to run the later in the background).
