Noticing this weird thing where all my objections to exceptions go away in a pure functional context, as long exceptions are considered a legitimate return from that context. Statically typed FP languages force a lot of machinery to achieve this.

In other words, if exceptions are handled at the meta-level, they don't need to be accounted for by the base-level types.
