The day of the royal wedding, we could not keep our eyes off her. What was she thinking, as she sat in the pews of the five-hundred-year-old chapel, enveloped in history and irony? http://nyer.cm/cyE8PHJ pic.twitter.com/iK1AlN2A6l

Love. She saw her daughter smiling and she felt maternal love

Spot on. I've seen this picture a dozen times and every time it's warmed my heart. I think you just nailed the reason why.

I could just feel her mom’s joy. Such a special moment. Great wedding. I cried like a baby and realized how nice it was to be in a nontoxic place filled with love and joy, even if there was a sprinkling of culture shock for some. All were part of history. A wonderful day!

There's something about this coverage of Doria - Oh! A Black mother, being black in the UK, being black in such a fancy setting! How does she do it? How does she cope? - which is totally patronising and reeks of paternalism towards a black person. Assuming she's out of her depth

I'm betting that although most people don't know what she was thinking, most parents know ecactly what she was feeling.

Sadly, probably not the first time she was alone at an event for Megan. Like every single mom who has had to say ‘Dad couldn’t be here but he really wanted to be. He just had to go to X. He’s so proud of u. I’ll send him pictures’ Brave face for her child. Breaking her heart.

"This seat is uncomfortable", "My daughter looks beautiful" "He looks handsome" "Holy shit, that's the queen". Deep philosophical insights I know. She's not experiencing a divine revelation, stop gushing over this like this is the second coming.

"We" means you, a few million undemocratic, snobbish souls and royalists, and who else? Much respect to her as a survivor, but I (and at least a hundred million others) saw barely 3 minutes of it. Unless ... you're using the royal "We."
