My boyfriend bought an autonomous vacuum for our apartment yesterday. Last night at 1:30 AM it *independently* decided to run. We woke up to the terror of total darkness and the sounds of a robovac trying to force itself through our closed bedroom door. So my answer is: very.

Our robovac committed violent suicide, it flung itself down the stairs while we ate breakfast, parts everywhere. It was very frightening for us. #noempathyforrobots

I find it both interesting and concerning that images of HAL9000 (= bad AI) are oftentimes used in the scope of these discussions. How can we have an open discussion about sth when the accompanying imagery is already implying a certain bias towards it?

Indeed, I've never seen a discussion about ai with a picture of KITT or another good ai character

Since humans are the creators, we don't have much to worry about. However, once AI can create itself and improve on the half-assed efforts of humans? Yes. Then we may as well pray they treat us better than we treat other beings or each other.

Stephen Hawking was considered to be "of intelligence"...prior to his death he was hailed as one of the greatest minds in modern times. He himself heeded warning of AI development. Perhaps we shouldn't be so much frightened as concerned and cautious?
