"Parenting" has been a gerund for 100 years, says @OED. "Parent" has been used as a verb since the mid-1600s.

But the "gerund" ref is just glib and meaningless. Yes, the past 40+ years are a time when "parenting" became a popular alternative to "child-rearing." That may or may not be v. meaningful, but "became a gerund" is silly.
