"Hitting Bashar al-Assad now might bring a momentary sense of just deserts, but there is nothing to be proud of in Syria, and no American solution—not even for the gassing of children," George Packer writes: http://nyer.cm/cNlMjjc pic.twitter.com/gOG98TDWG8

        Just deserts? Really?

it’s just deserts (pron like desserts). Deserts here is the plural of the archaic noun “desert”, meaning "that which one deserves". "Desert" is now archaic and rarely used outside this phrase.

Given that the word is now spelled incorrectly so often that the wrong choice is believed to be correct, I refrain from using the phrase in print.

H.L. Mencken would approve. He points out in The American Language that once a spelling or usage becomes so prevalent as to be misused by the majority, it can become the new, accepted spelling or usage. Often this degrades language, but often it's just "moving on & letting go".

No evidence Assad did it and no motivation for Assad to do it now with the US about to leave. Are there any journalists in the US?

But why, oh why do people do this? Are they throwing their own children and grand hildren into the lot? Why can’t we just live and let live? Are we maybe TOO intelligent which makes us conniving and manipulative?
