Great piece, so insightful and honest.
@MollyRingwald I'm your age, and remember what Hughes' work meant in the 80s. I loathed Porky's and felt violated just watching it. You parse the issues extremely well.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

And? Hindsight is often 20/20...all one can do is make the best decision based on the information available at the time and run with it.

Was he supposed to write as things are in 2018, or as they were in 1984? Was he writing teenagers as we want them to be, or how they are?
-
He was writing a Mickey Rooney Breakfast at Tiffany's Asian character named "Long Duc Dong". Extrapolate.
-
I don’t think that’s what John Hughes was doing at all. I graduated high school in 1984 and the Bender/Claire characters and interactions were very relatable. You’d make a better point to say both movies have “Breakfast” in the titles.
-
The character I named was in "16 Candles". It was embarrassing even then.
-
Oh I see now. Your post makes even less sense now. You do see that The Donger was a caricature? Never meant to be taken seriously?
