Same reason why the human race has gotten taller over time.

Better nutrition? Why did that not result in humans having very long necks then?
-
Taller='s more favorable mutation for mating. Given, humans probably did it for aesthetics...
-
Mmm maybe. Being taller has benefits which are practical. Psychological advantage in power struggles, reach in a fight. Giraffe necks appear to be a liability. Could be like the tail of a peacock I suppose
-
It was beneficial in droughts. The taller necks allowed them to get what scant leaves were available. Thus being a favorable mutation for survival and mating. From what I can remember out of elementary biology. Honestly, I didn't even read the article.

I can tell tbh
. The answer in the article is essentially 'we're not sure exactly'. -
Well thanks for doing the work for me :D I figured it would be something inane because this is a thing we learn in pedestrian biology classes. But it still seems to mistify people.
-
It's not that inane. It has some discussion of the giraffe genome project. I like it when mainstream media have science articles which don't claim to have solved some big question. Instead it gives details of what has been speculated & what is going on in research now.
