Ben Affleck’s is the kind of middle-aged-white-male sadness that the Internet loves to mock—a mocking that depends on a rejection of this sadness, as well as a hedging identification with it.http://nyer.cm/y5YPmI1

“Sadness?” Really? Ben Affleck is a Multi-Oscar winning millionaire, father and philanthropist. You’re the New Yorker... do better.

What's wrong with you NYer? 3rd day I've had to see you milking this photo of Affleck with some lame facade on sadness - it's shallow, pointless and mean spirited.

so, I don't even particularly like Ben Affleck, but this mean tabloid drivel wrapped in a veneer of "Ivy League-educated close analysis" is still mean tabloid drivel. And it was the other ninety times you've posted it

Was this supposed to be published by @NewYorker? Honestly, I didn’t understand what was the purpose of mocking the private life of an individual who happens to be a celebrity.

Depardieu as the standard of virility isn't "enlightened" it's bs patriarchal double-standards. "His gut is pooching outward in a way that, in a more enlightened country like, say, France, would perhaps be considered virile, not unlike the lusty Gérard Depardieu in his prime"
