They should have an electoral college..it takes away the threat of that pesky democracy.

Yes Lisa, the electoral college makes the popular vote invalid and therefore we are not a democracy.

Murphy's law on voting in managed democracies/dictatorships: the lesser is the popularity of the dictators, the greater the number of popular votes they shall be polled.

“Russian voters had nothing but bad options”! I am surprised NewYorker has the effrontery to use this title for an article. What did U. S. voters have in their ballot tickets in Nov 2016? At least we have not heard anyone in Moscow complaining about collusion.

We had one very experienced public servant vs one pathological liar, reality show host, sociopath.

If this is not modern dictatorship then I don’t know what is

It’s exactly what Trump fantasizes about for the US. He already “jokingly” brought it up. Surrounded by buddies and military. Trying to undermine the DOJ, FBI & CIA. He’s well on his way if we don’t put an end to it soon.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Anthony Kennedy have both been on the SCOTUS longer, have NO term limits, NO elections, and NO limits on how they corrupt the meaning of the constitution and laws of the USA to conform to political views never envisioned by the drafters of the language.
-
What are your feelings on the refusal of Congress to hold discussion on the appointment of Merrick Garland?
-
My feelings? Hmmm... my opinion is that it was pragmatic politics. My feeling is that any justice who fails to rule in accordance with a provision as enacted should not be seated, or be removed from the court. Justices should not amend the laws; that’s for the people to do.
-
What about the Constitution giving Presidents the authority to appoint judges? Would you feel the same if a Democratic Congress had refused to even hold a discussion on the conservative appointment of a Republican President?
-
It’s a political process, and not germane to the question of length of tenure.
-
Clarence Thomas has served longer than Ginsburg; have you any complaints about his tenure?
-
No, but I wasn’t complaining; I was pointing out the irony of the reaction to Putin’s length of time in office. I mentioned RBG and Kennedy because I knew they have been around a long time. The US Presidency has term limits: so should Congress and the Supreme Court.
-
Let me rephrase that response. Yes, I have the same complaint: appointments should not be for life; they should be for a set term of years.

The Russians had a short list of 1 and got Putin. What’s America’s excuse?
