Curling exists because (and with all due respect to the many fine athletes involved) . . . why? http://nyer.cm/IFk9KFe pic.twitter.com/pgSFON8CDH

It's a sport that doesn't require one to be a great athlete but welcomes those who like to stay active, physically & socially, and have fun. If you think of curling as winter's answer to golf, does that put it into perspective for you?

You can ask why any sport exists. If it ain't for you get back on your pony and look for the next polo pick-up game.

We may ask the same question about any sport, particularly, American football where all that's involved is hitting hard enough to knock your opponent unconscious, but preferably impaired for life, to move an odd-shaped ball ten yards up or ten yards down the field.

Scots have a long tradition of yelling at inanimate objects. Also of consuming alcohol in quantity. The 2 may be related..

Because there are people that enjoy curling, and even people that enjoy watching it. I like the New Yorker, but with all due respect to the many fine journalists involved in producing this tweet, this was dim-witted and unnecessary.

Is quite an interesting story in fact... Did you know that the sweeping is to slow down the stone to control its curl... Did you know the track is not smooth but pebbled?

If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. No need to criticize those who enjoy it.

Yeah, sorry curling fans and Olympians, but if this is an Olympic event, so should be ice hole fishing and sledding on a snow shovel.

If it didn’t exist, you’d have to find something else to make trite observations about.
