There is a thicket of challenges confronting the authorities when it comes to keeping guns away from people suffering from mental illness.http://nyer.cm/8dLNmPw

The trick will be focusing on the small subset of the mentally ill who are dangerous. Fortunately, like this guy in Florida, they often self-identify at the top of their lungs. We should believe them.

STOP IT. Stop buying into the NRA bullshit. The facts simply do not support the repeated insistence on the part of the pro-gun lobby and the politicians they've bought and paid for, that gun violence is a mental health issue.

The only nation on earth that isn't a war zone, where people are being shot to death by the thousands, is the US. And what's the difference between us and the rest of the world? It's not mental illness. Every country has that.

It's not social ills - every country has those. It's not poverty - every country that isn't a Scandinavian socialist paradise has that. It's unfettered access to guns. That is the one and only difference across the board when you compare the US to the rest of the developed world.

Can't be that hard; incidence is lower everywhere lawmakers bother to try. Guns need to be unusual. Your cops wouldn't be so twitchy if it weren't the case that everyone they meet could reasonably be packing. Sort it the fuck out, America. Much love.

Can we not take away the crazy guns?!?! If I have to let everyone be happy having a gun, then we all get a musket. Like the kind of gun that was around WHEN the Constitution was written!!

Please why don't you write an article about legislation differences between you and the rest of the world, where the #MassShootings phenomena is unknown? Also standard police brutality could be lowered if having a gun should be an odd exception.

It should be really hard to buy or get a gun. Maybe @GOP can parlay some of their ideas about voting rights to gun rights. Make it hard to do!

or else stigma made it a self-fulfilling prophecy. Ostracizing/pigeonholing a "troubled" person rarely has a good outcome, at least for that person

1/2 Correction to a misstatement in the 4th paragraph: federal law also prohibits possession of a firearm by anyone who has been adjudicated mentally defective. This includes administrative adjudications, which in fact are far more common than adjudications in a court of law.

2/2 Both the Veterans Admin, and Social Security Admin have processes for administrative adjudication of a person as mentally defective as understood by federal gun laws. VA adjudications are ~ 10x as common as SSA. Recent law bars SSA adjudications from preventing gun ownership.
