Amy Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama is shocking because the artist has somehow conjured a vision of the former First Lady, one of the most photographed women in history, that we have not yet seen: http://nyer.cm/ZGckiNn pic.twitter.com/yl51NkdN4L

I love it. She did a beautiful job capturing the serenity of Michelle's soul. ❤️

The reason we haven’t seen it is because it looks nothing like her. It’s an awful depiction. So is Barack’s. They look like they were painted by someone in a freshman art course who hasn’t perfected a classic portrait. They should be burned & never displayed. B&M deserve better.

They choose the artists. They didn’t want a classic, old-fashioned portrait. These are contemporary artists. You don’t have to like it.

I’m probably going to get slammed, but I absolutely love this portrait. The picture has almost an abstract quality until it is viewed closer. Beautiful painting of a beautiful lady.

I agree with you. The artist has captured the essence of @MichelleObama perfectly.

This is a painting, not a photograph. Artists can choose to change any part of the body for the effect they want. If you look closely at the photo you can see it is very close to her features.pic.twitter.com/alM7wS8Zuv

I think the artist made it on purpose to accentuate the stylization of the subject. Same with the color palette and the use of depth. It's not "real Michelle" but ideal Michelle that she painted, and what she stands for.

Looking at the portrait makes me wonder if the artist has ever even seen Michelle Obama. It appears that she painted someone else.
