If the world unfolds as it should, the very people that might shop at Amazon Go will be jobless and therefore unable to shop at Amazon Go.

Automation also taking jobs from airport workers. At Dublin Airport, passengers now weigh, get boarding pass and tag bag at free standing kiosks. Then take to belt that reads tag and sends on its way. Probably in USA too. Sad.

Is it better to have humans doing those meaningless tasks that can be so easily automated?

A good question. I suppose humans will continue to evolve and find something else to do when their jobs are taken over by automation.....or do they end up on welfare? I don't know....

I think car salesmen faced same prospect when online sales sights and direct mfg selling entered the picture! EBay maybe done it to auctioneers and pawn shop workers/owners. This happens when more economical, convenient, useful devices emerge, just like when better products do.
