In a country like Britain, whose citizens are, according to tradition, so buttoned up, the appointment of a Minister for Loneliness to alleviate social isolation provides an ironic counterpoint to the national caricature.http://nyer.cm/jrFiqKT

I do feel bad for people who are lonely, but I must admit that the Ministry of Loneliness sounds like a Monty Python skit.

To all those Brits voted “Most Likely to Become Minister of Loneliness” in high school, who’s laughing now?

I think America needs a minister of loneliness more than anywhere. I think the gun violence comes from this. The isolation. I think it is a very important thing to address. Maybe, the most important.

this reminds me of the .@washingtonpost story As family dynamics change in Japan, more people are living by themselves — and dying alonehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/news/world/wp/2018/01/24/feature/so-many-japanese-people-die-alone-theres-a-whole-industry-devoted-to-cleaning-up-after-them/?utm_term=.e49a21eff9d9 …

Yes I read that article as well. It was very poignant. We have the same trend happening here as people retire-move-spouse dies and they are alone.

Its a hopeless cliche - the sort of engiish people who are buttons up ate the sort of people who wd read The New Yorker - Many British people are gregarious, funny and more open than many in

The irony would be no less, though different, if the US President were to appoint such a minister or assume the portfolio himself (!).

Would have been good to hear from the minister herself, and ask @tracey_crouch what she thinks of the role that isolation has played in #Brexit.
