In @tnyshouts: “We don’t call it Stratford-Upon-Avon. We just say ‘Stratford.’ I don’t know why anyone would think we’d get so technical. It’s like saying ‘Manhattan of New York.’” http://nyer.cm/erpGytw pic.twitter.com/FnSx31sFRS

Unless you're in Stratford in East London.

Also it isn't like saying Manhattan of New York. It's like saying Manhattan-upon-Hudson. Reasonable if there's another Manhattan 80 miles away.

The reason is there is another Stratford in east London (not so salubrious).

I thought it was “Stratford ON Avon.” Didn’t it used to be?

The district is on Avon, the parish is Stratford upon Avon.

There is a need to distinguish between Manhattan, Kansas and the other ones. Stratfords abound as well. Only a snob would get snooty about that, certainly not a Kansan.

Other Stratford are available. Also Stamford Bridges and one of the Leeds Castles is not in Leeds.

"South of Houston" might mean different things to someone living in Manhattan and someone visiting Texas. But you don't get many Brits turning up in SoHo in Manhattan and asking where the rockets take off from!

I don't think the people commenting read the article. It also includes a "quote" of: "Wolves can get you when you’re walking down the street. I hear sometimes they even get in your window.”
