Stress. I was going into a grocery store counting my money more than once before heading to the checkout. Afraid of not having enough for the food in my cart. A horrible horrible feeling - feeling that way about everything that cost money.

I’d argue that feeling poor comes from being *made to feel* poor. And the privileged can do that without saying a single word, with just a look or a turning of the head or not making eye contact. It’s a feeling that leaves its mark, for life.
