An opioid addicted baby is now born every half hour. The Sackler family has made billions on the opioid crisis.http://nyer.cm/18r0I5b

Please stop saying babies are born addicted to opioids! Addiction implies behavior. Drug dependent is the more appropriate term.

Language is important when it comes to combating stigma around substance use and abuse. I don't always get it right but I did believe it matters.

There's a HUGE difference. Look at it this way~ Are diabetics ADDICTED to insulin? No they're DEPENDANT on it. Addicts have completely different mindset. CPP's are DEPENDENT upon opioids for quality of life. Babies have no choice in the matter. They are DEPENDENT.

Took this picture at the British Museum the other day. This is where their money goes to as opposed to the epidemic they seem to have caused.pic.twitter.com/lUUyz3Si4d

No baby is born addicted. Do better @NewYorker this language is stigmatizing, hysterical and damaging. Only about 1,000 recomendations out there on better terminology.

This is a very, very long read, but worth the time! Exposes the family, the company, the beginnings of the opioid crisis.
