US has a long history of tacitly backing Pakistan as a fundamentalist Islamic state as a bulwark to Soviets in Afghanistan getting their warm-water port. Reagan's administration fostered Zia-ul-Haq's Islamisation, and the fundamentalist religiosity of the US inspired Zia-ul-Haq.
