The people affected by the Met's new pay policy will be families visiting our ruthlessly expensive city from out of state or from another country; students who have taken the bus or train in to fill their heads with art; immigrants without the right papers http://nyer.cm/9u9SQLh

Oh c’mon! Sure the Met should stay free if it can, it’s a fabulous idea, but no family on s serious budget is visiting NYC, no student studying art in NYC can do so without serious financial help, it’s a city for the elite, period

That’s total nonsense. People from all over the country/world from every economic bracket visit NYC. It’s an expensive thing to do, yes. But that’s not the point. If that were the point, then they should make everybody pay—which is coming by the way.

The one place I want to visit in NYC with my family and it will cost us $75 to walk in the door. The museum where I work is free, and we get many donations because we personally interact with and help visitors.

The sad truth is that the Met spent years and years bilking those same people by keeping the suggested admission fee an opaque policy mostly only locals and regulars understood. Once they couldn’t covertly screw those people anymore, overtly doing so became inevitable.

The @metmuseum new policy is very elitist and will favour those from Manhattan who are mostly very rich. It may backfire in terms of out of state patronage - particularly at will drafting or updating time.

I had to think really hard about this. After serious reflection, I have a few takeaways. 1: the rate they are asking is crazy high! 2: The fact they can’t afford normal expenses is due to mismanagement, burdening the public to deserve access to these works is deplorable!
