Weather is a famously boring conversation, except when it suddenly isn’t: Why are people so fascinated by storms, even when they’re nowhere near them?http://nyer.cm/1ElRYYS

As a kid I was in a cyclone in a northern Wisconsin lake cottage. It was incredible. 13 trees knocked down near the cottage. My eyes and ears were transfixed and fascinated. But on TV, storms are of no interest. Not indifferent to victims. Just think the pub weak news.

Maybe it's because the press is relentless in their coverage.

Because misery loves company and here in the Midwest, the cold has been around for a long time...so that’s when people say at least we don’t live in Boston or Buffalo...as they try to justify their bleak existence

Same reason we’re interested in murder. Except with storms, it’s Mother Nature that’s trying to kill us.

I’m not fascinated, just concerned for the homeless up and down the East Coast. Especially for homeless men and women with pets who can’t get into shelters for the night.

Same reason people slow down to see a traffic accident; it's something unusual, different and somewhat exciting.

I don't know I had a lot of fun making fun of Floridians while they grappled with their one inch of snow and don't know how to drive in it. Meanwhile, in Minnesota where I live the temperatures dropped to a 40 below wind chill a few days and it's been below zero for over a week

They don't. They thrill the media. It's the closest a meteorologist gets to reporting a live car chase.
