The magic of “Star Wars” was never the formula. It was novelty.http://nyer.cm/KwjG7j0

Only the original trilogy is true @starwars . The combination of George Lucas and Joseph Campbell making a modern myth about if we serve the machine or the machine serves us is true greatness. The other movies are fluff at best and drain the story of its underlying meaning.

I tend to agree. The only other movie that even came close to working was rogue one.

I would count that one a a close supporting movie too. Most significant about that was that the characters where part of the cause and filled in an important back story.

I haven’t seen TLJ yet and to be honest, I’m a bit nervous.

I believe that it is easier to right movies about rebellion rather that rebuilding and dealing with with a defeated and still dangerous foe. The writers took the easy way out. But we can believe the fiction we chose.

That is very well said. I recently wrote an essay about how dystopian fiction is an easy way out.

Nope: the “magic” IS the emotional embodiment of Joseph Campbell’s “hero’s journey” in a fleshed-out sci fi myth. That’s why we forgive the weak dialogue & hammy acting.

Nah. The magic of Star Wars was the familiar told in an entertaining way that felt new.

From Williams' cribbing of Holst, Korngold and Dvorak to Lucas' use of Campbellian archetypes, plots from Kurosawa, imagery from Mézières (Valerian and Laureline)... everything about STAR WARS has always been formulaic but the endgame is balance, or money.

No, fuck you, it was about the human drama. That's why it is called a "space opera." If you want "shit happens, the movie," go watch Waterworld. Burn in hell for reminding me of this dumpster fire of a franchise.
