It is hard for modern audiences to appreciate how revolutionary the self-presentations of soul singers like Otis Redding were when they first came on the scene: http://nyer.cm/mGLLX6p pic.twitter.com/xAleAtUNXa

Otis was no fool. At Monterey Pop he slyly asked the all white crowd, "This is the peace and love crowd, right? I think he was rightfully checking on their commitment past love beads, incense, and "crossing over."

all I know is my neighbor in Neenah, WI exposed me to his Otis Redding albums when I was 16. His music formed my taste. Bc of him i sought out Sam & Dave, Sam Cooke and Wilson Pickett. What an incredible gift.
