The first half I felt I had experienced so viscerally with one guy and then the second with another. This writing was incredibly familiar and sad but so well done

I had no idea how universal this series of emotions is for women. I didn't think other women had had an experience like this, and it makes me sad for all of us.

For me, it was always covered in layers of shame. I didn't think anyone else would forgive my decision to sleep with him. Because being slutty is the worst crime we can commit.

Extremely relatable. Women are trained to not to be honest about negative feelings. This hurts everyone - such as men being terrible at sex/kissing because women are trained not to give honest feedback.

The USA. I am just being honest. Please don’t be so literal. Let’s work together to try to better our American culture for everyone, not blame and pit genders against each other.

I’ve met a lot of women that have a similar story. Besides all the negative things (e.g., porn brain, lack of emotional intelligence, fragile male ego, and a beard), dude’s a stalker, which makes the ending of the story even more terrifying. Great story 👍

To be fair, Margot didn't show much emotional intelligence either. Her narcissism-fueled arousal outpaced the reality of who and what Robert was.

She’s far from perfect but she was definitely much better in reading the emotional cues, the nonverbal stuff. Compared to her this guy was a caveman, so ill equipped. And the narcissism you describe is just probably the illusion of experiencing the story through her eyes :)

No her whole attraction to him was based on how he made her feel - like he made her feel tiny, delicate, hot, wanted, young, etc etc - none of it was about him. The whole thing was a forced fantasy from the beginning.

This is the comment I wish I'd written! Impeccably precise. Young people must be warned against projecting their desires onto unworthy partners. Margot escalated things before she was truly ready and willing, and somehow it's Robert's fault? (Though to be fair, he WAS an ass…)

There's not much to do with cats, but a great read. At first, I was uncomfortable with, well, everything, and I wondered why I was reading it. But at the end, when he was texting her non-stop, and that last line-- I literally gasped. That hit me.

It’s the slow realisation that gut instinct is always right. Cats usually a good early clue.

....Women fantasize about romance, passion & friendship & truly knowing someone. Men seem to fantasize about a sex doll slave who will do everything for them, be comparable to their mother, laugh at their jokes which are often rude. It's like men don't want personality or opinion

Sorry if this is your experience. Be careful about painting with a broad brush. The “guys want someone to be their mommy” is a particularly tired trope. I don’t know any men who want this.

Okay but throughout this story Robert is noticeably relieved, relaxed and turned on by Margot’s tears, her self deprication, her feigned stupidity and her exaggerated naivety. She puts so much work into this joyless night. If millions of women identify with that, that is bad!

Not identify with, but recognize why women go along with it. Honestly, it just seems so normal. I was at the dinner table w my mum & a family friend, I've known him since I was born, put his hands around my throat to get my attention/as a joke then repeatedly asked....
