        This article neglects to mention that the peak of serial killers was the 1980s and has been in decline ever since. Where are they now? Defence and security: the military or information technology, of course.

        The author of the article to which you are referring only assigns the title of “serial killing”after one is caught. His data is really not comparable to this article.

        In the early 80s, the NYTimes ran an editorial re the relatively new science of profiling. The FBI estimated there were about 100 serial killers active at the time.

        The problem with that is that during the drug wars of the 90's in New York, any drug dealer who killed three rivals was classed as a serial murderer.

        So...the New York homicide task force had to create a special classification for multiple murders by the same gun as opposed to a single killer. This lead to the creation of the comptroller in the NYPD.
