Powerful. As an Italian American who was bullied in elementary school in the 50's by kids assuming that my grandfather was a Mafioso (I had no idea, what the Mafia was) I can.empathize with this. At least there was no Social media back then.Just 3 recesses a day on the playground.

Herein lies the problem of why he (& so many Left-Wing Latinos) are fundamentally unhappy. There is a social-pressure to reject the Spanish side of himself, to cast them as villains. History is not black & white. Not all indigenous tribes were saints & not all Spaniards villains.
-
It may be true that not all indigenous tribes were saints, nor were all Spaniards villainous, but the fact remains that the latter slaughtered the former and the so called "civilized" world that followed continues to marginalize and mistreat the indigenous people.
-
It also spawned an entire new civilization that is as vibrant & beautiful as any on earth. I think Leguizamo’s a genius but he is obviously haunted by many demons and part of that is reconciling having to “hate” half of himself, as I’ve seen in too many of my Latino friends.
