I grew up 10 miles east of O.C. This superficial essay trades on nostalgia and misses critical analysis. My mom and I went to a debate between Christy Vilsack and Steve King--we witnessed OC prejudice firsthand.

More: OC is not renowned by much of NW Iowa that does not support Steve King and separatism. The essayist seems to have missed so much of what could make this little town great.

There are a lot of us who left as well because the life/community was not accepting of those of us who challenged the accepted norms and were bullied or shunned for it.

In the Rotterdam neighborhoud of Feijenoord the Turks are the biggest minority group with their own social life and a growing infrastructure. There are some similarities.
