Disruption is an extreme sport for Flaubert. He challenges us to despise Emma Bovary—but does he despise her?http://nyer.cm/T9ByP3d

I though Flaubert despised her. She's vapid, without sense of recourse, and unpitiable.

He said she was modeled on himself though, so I dunno about that.

The two are not exclusive. Frankly, a heaping measure of self loathing and dark humor seems fitting.

But that still assumes we're meant to hate her. I don't.

Not at all. It assumes only that Flaubert enjoyed hating himself. Which I find kinda charming.

Unforgettable/tragic Emma Bovary-easy to dislike-shows us dreams are complex: risk, change & consequences- do we really know her? Reread.

Brilliant, makes me want to read the book again.I've never seen Emma as a particularly sympathetic character, it was easy to despise her.

Yes. I wrote a paper about this in school & when you think about what a narcissist she is you start to realize she’s flawed like all of us.
