Opioids now kill more than 50,000 Americans a year, 10,000 more than AIDS did at the peak of that epidemic: http://nyer.cm/Bnttzql pic.twitter.com/4N2dln8OwS

@StefanKertesz what is total #opioid deaths out of 64,000+ total OD fatalities in 2016.

1/@NewYorker want some fact checking? Here is the total for 2015:33,091, last year for which CDC calculated total https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/65/wr/mm655051e1.htm …pic.twitter.com/5h5FzixfNQ

        They're probably referring to 2016 preliminary counts. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/health_policy/monthly-drug-overdose-death-estimates.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjOtumb4o7XAhVH7CYKHVq_DOwQFgg4MAA&usg=AOvVaw1klA_ZHBLZobtD2yzQIMw7 …

But doing so inaccurately right? The prelim counts don’t offer an opioid total but rather count by individual drugs (with overlap implied)

Can't add up all drugs from each category and say this is the total... CDC actually says: DON'T DO THAT

Correct. They're not exclusive. But if you have the MCOD data you can subset on multiple ICD codes. That number looks right.

MCOD lists up to 20 causes of death. Was it heroin or fentanyl? Hard to say. But these should be individual opioid-related ODs.

Are you saying the 52,404 figure is plausible or that there is a real computation available (I need to cite it if accurate-help appreciated)

What's that compared to gun deaths or those associated with terror attacks? (I'm genuinely interested in the comparison)
