A good case can be made that “The Hobbit”—released 80 years ago—is a better read than “The Lord of the Rings.”  http://nyer.cm/26Y8rgZ pic.twitter.com/0eVJJFsfQy

The New Yorker today reminded me that five years ago @JonMichaud said one thing I agree with: Sam Gamgee is annoying and drags down LOTR.

Nope. Hobbit is a children's book, LoTR is an adult series with depth and tragedy. Love them both, but not on the same level.

Good points but it was exactly the female role I missed in The Hobbit. Who didn't wait for Arwen with bated breath? @NewYorker

An obvious case, actually. Once LOTR hits the Council of Elrond, it takes itself far too seriously. All those Elbereths.

I heartily agree and I decided that when I was 17. Tolkien needed a damned good editor to rope him in on LOTR. Hobbit was far better.
