Maryann Gray was only fifteen minutes from her apartment, when she saw a pale flash and felt a bump.http://nyer.cm/5mRVzjr

This death was predictable and preventable. Instead of excusing herself and other killers work to prevent similar tragedies.

I think the most eye-opening and perhaps important (a value-laden word, I admit) TNY has published this year.

If she felt remorse she could have looked into why she killed someone following the speed limit of 45mph 45MPH where children play!

Why are you attacking her for following the speed limit? Same tone could be taken for teaching children not to run onto 45MPH roads

Children play. That's a fact. They shouldn't have to die for it.

I know, I'm a nanny. I also teach the 2 & 3 year old the dangers of the road and not to trust the driver to stop for you. Accidents happen.

We know children that young can't assess risk/danger. 45mph limit on a residential street is negligence. someone killed = not an accident.

Maybe they live in country? I grew up in WV and those speed limits aren't uncommon(dangerous!) I wanna know who established those speeds :(

A sober read. Unintended consequences often hurt the longest and deepest. Leaves one feeling emotionally powerless.

My heart breaks for both sides. A needed read in a society that is quick to resonate with victims and demonize perceived antagonists. Wow. 😔

Everyone's worst nightmare. Never open a car door without checking for oncoming bikes. Car makers should install alerts on car door handles.

As a counselor for pre-release felons, have met people who've done time for negligent death. Think about it often with fear and trembling.

Profound, well written & researched. I've never had an accident like this in my 60 yrs., but so many close calls. I take the risk every day.

Accidents do happen, but we're far too quick to excuse negligence in the name of accidents, as when kids play with guns. 1/2
